April

Note: For the spring months of March through May the tips will largely remain the same.

Growth Picks Up – So Should You

April is a key month in the transition to spring and a great time to start planning your pitch renovations. Whether you’re carrying out full renovations or just tackling problem areas, the first step is to decide how long the pitch can be taken out of use. This will help determine what work is realistic.

Before any renovation involving overseeding, top dressing, scarification or fertilising, gradually reduce the grass height to around 15 to 20mm. This helps keep the pitch manageable while you stay off it for two to three weeks to allow new seedlings to germinate. It also keeps the existing grass short enough, so it doesn’t smother the fresh growth.

April’s mild temperatures and frequent rainfall make it an ideal time for in-season overseeding. Getting seed down now gives it a head start, reducing the risk of poor germination later in the season when drought becomes more likely. For best results, use a spreader to ensure even coverage and controlled application. A typical seeding rate is around 35g per square metre, depending on conditions.  You can order your seed here.

The moist ground also makes April a good time to carry out deep spiking. This task breaks up compacted soil, improves drainage, encourages stronger root growth and helps with nutrient uptake. Done properly, it can make your pitch more resilient to dry spells in the summer.

What is Scarification?

Scarification is the process of removing dead organic matter (thatch) and debris from the turf to allow water, air and nutrients to reach the grass roots. This helps reduce moss and weeds while encouraging thicker, healthier growth. Scarification can be done with a rake or a mechanical scarifier. When using a machine, the depth can be adjusted to suit the time of year. During the playing season, opt for a light scarification to prepare the surface for overseeding and top dressing. More aggressive treatments are best saved for end-of-season renovations.

When applying top dressing during the season, avoid using too much as it can affect playability. Try to leave as much time as possible between applying it and the pitch being used again.
