January
Note: For the winter months of November through February the tips will largely remain the same.
Focus on High Wear Areas and Plan Ahead
January often brings unpredictable and challenging conditions, with frost, rain, snow or even mild spells all possible. Because of this, it’s essential to stay up to date with the forecast and adjust your maintenance plans accordingly. If you are looking for turf protection, we have a range of products available here.
Managing Wear in High Traffic Zones
By this point in the season, central areas of the pitch, such as the goalmouths and centre circle, are likely to show signs of wear. These are the areas that need the most attention during January.
You can:
• Use hand forking to relieve compaction and improve drainage.
• Carry out divot repairs to keep the surface level.
• Apply sports sand to help stabilise and support the turf.
Post-Match Recovery
After each match or training session, brushing the surface helps return the grass to an upright position. This small task can make a big difference by improving airflow, reducing disease risk, removing debris, and helps preventing grass thinning, especially during periods of reduced growth.
Start Planning for Spring Renovations
Although January is still mid-winter, it’s the perfect time to start thinking ahead to spring renovations. Begin drawing up a plan based on what your pitch will need – whether that’s overseeding, topdressing, aeration or a full renovation programme.
If you work with external contractors, it’s wise to contact them now and get booked in early. Waiting until the last minute can mean missing out on preferred dates or having to compromise on timing.
