March

First Cuts and Early Applications

As temperatures begin to rise, March marks the return of grass growth. That means it’s time to bring your mowers back into action. Keep a close eye on growth rates and start mowing as needed, gradually increasing the frequency as conditions allow. Begin to lower the height of cut slowly, reducing by around 5mm at a time, as removing more than a third of the grass height in one go can cause unnecessary stress and hinder healthy development.

With milder conditions and regular rainfall, March is also a good time to start repairing worn or damaged areas. The weather should help encourage seed germination and root recovery, but timing is everything. Watch the forecasts closely and avoid sowing or fertilising too early, especially if cold spells are still lingering, as this can lead to wasted seed and poor uptake of nutrients.

If your grass is looking pale or tired after winter, consider starting your fertiliser programme this month. A slow-release granular fertiliser can help green up the surface and support consistent growth. It’s especially useful if you're managing multiple pitches or working with limited resources, as just 2–3 applications a year may be enough to keep things ticking over.
Finally, if you haven’t already, now is the time to think ahead. Stock up on materials for your spring renovations while availability is good and before demand spikes. Planning early helps avoid delays and ensures you’ve got what you need when the weather and pitch conditions are right.
