February
Note: For the winter months of November through February the tips will largely remain the same.
Finish Repairs and Get Ahead of the Season
As we approach the end of winter, February often brings a mix of challenging conditions, from cold snaps and frosts to prolonged rainfall. Staying ahead of the weather forecast remains vital, helping you plan and respond appropriately to protect your playing surface
Heavy rain can quickly make pitches unplayable, especially without adequate drainage. If your site has a drainage system in place, now is the time to inspect it. Clear any blockages or debris to ensure water can run off freely. Neglected drains can easily become overwhelmed during periods of sustained rain.
For those without a formal drainage system, surface water management becomes even more important. Regular aeration and hand forking can help relieve surface compaction and create channels for water to move through the soil profile. These techniques won’t prevent all postponements, but they can make the difference between a playable and unplayable surface.
February is also a good time to take stock. Review how your pitch has coped with winter so far, assess any recurring issues, and start thinking ahead to spring renovations. Planning now will give you a head start once the weather improves.
